The Eiffel Tower is a famous steel tower in Paris, France and has come to symbolize the city.  It was built in 1889 for that year’s World’s Fair and was originally intended to be a temporary structure.

Itsukushima   Leave a comment

Itsukushima is a Shinto shrine in Western Japan, on the small island of Itsukushima.  The shrine has existed on some form since the sixth century.  The buildings of the current shrine stand in piers the water and appear to float above the water.

Sequoia National Forest   Leave a comment

Sequoia National Forest contains, among other natural wonders, several groves of Giant Sequoia trees.  Giant Sequoias are the largest species of tree in the world when measured by volume.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber   1 comment

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a medieval city in Bavaria, Germany.  The city is still surrounded by its fortified wall.  It’s named for it’s red castle and the fact the it’s above the Tauber River.

Hven is an island in the Strait of Öresund, between Denmark and Sweden.  Hven is three miles long, and was home to Tycho Brahe during the late 16th Century.  Tycho Brahe was one of the last astronomers not to use a telescope, and he charted the heavens with unprecedented accuracy.  He built a large house and an below ground observatory called Stjerneborg, meaning “Castle of the Stars,” on Hven.  Stjerneborg has been excavated and somewhat restored.

Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is a red sandstone mountain close to the geographic center of Australia.  It stands in the middle of the arid desert commonly known a The Outback, and is one of the most famous symbols of Australia.
