The Super Mario Brothers Super Show   1 comment

the "Real life Mario Brothers"
Link and Sprite

Each episode of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show had a live action introduction and ending hosted by the “Real life Mario Brothers” and a guest star who changed from week to week.  Mario was played by wrestler “Captain Lou” Albano, who also sang and danced during the end credits.

The bulk of the show was a cartoon.  On Monday through Thursday it was the Super Mario Brothers cartoon featuring Mario, Luigi, Princess and Toad.  But on Friday it was The Legend of Zelda, which I loved.  It wasn’t really true to the video games: Link and Zelda fought together, Zelda wore pants, Link would try to kiss Zelda and get slapped, and Link’s catchphrase was, “Excuuuuuse me, Princess!”  But I enjoyed it.

Voltron   Leave a comment

Voltron/GolionVoltron was an American adaptation of two Japanese giant robot anime series: Hyakujuuou Goraion (King of the Beasts GoLion) and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV (Armored Squadron Dairugger XV).  Voltron was the first cartoon I was really into, starting when I was in kindergarten.  The lion Voltron was my favorite.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles   Leave a comment

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was based on a comic book by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.  The comic book was gritty, dark, and sometimes disturbing, and the cartoon couldn’t have been more different without changing the name.  There was still action, but the characters were silly, goofy, and occasionally a little dumb.  I loved it.
